Not Another Annoyingly Healthy Lunchbox Post

Schools back, and yep, it's time for people like to me start posting pictures of their kid's healthy lunchboxes. Doesn't it get annoying sometimes? I know, because it used to annoy the crap out of me.

 

I used to look at all the pretty pictures of healthy lunchboxes on facebook and just ROLL MY EYE'S. In fact, they used to almost offend me. I would scoff at them and show builder-hubby "check out these poor kid's lunch boxes - maybe we should call CYPFS". A couple of pages I even stopped following as I just thought that it was all ridiculously over the top.

 

But, over time, I would go back. It was almost like looking at the latest chick magazines - you know you're going to feel bad about yourself once you see also these gorgeous hot babes rocking the latest trends, but you can't stop looking anyway.

 

Why was I feeling so offended by other kid's lunchboxes?

 

I had to really think about it, but I realised it came down to the fact that I knew my kid's lunches were pretty crappy, and that I needed to feed them healthier food. I felt bad about some of the food they were eating, but I didn't know how to change.

 

So like with most crappy feelings, we either hold them in internally, or we send them out - and so that's what I did - I sent them out. I criticised the healthy eating people, instead of facing the fact that I needed to do something about the way my kid's were eating.

 

Like every parent, I wanted the best for my kid's and for them to be healthy, but I had a whole bunch of (valid) excuses holding me back - I'm too busy, I don't have the money, I don't have the energy, I don't know what to feed them, I don't want to deal with the moaning. But, I knew that I was letting the excuses take precedent over feeding them food that was good for them, and reducing the stuff that wasn't.

 

So eventually I decided to put my Big Girl Pants on and do something about it.

 

First I focused on reducing the packet food. I started slowly, educated myself, read labels, came up with healthy alternatives that I knew my kid's would eat, and one by one started getting the crap stuff out and the good stuff in.

 

It took time to make the change. And more energy - those home made nut slices aren't just going to bake themselves you know. And let's face it, opening a packet of Uncle Toby muesli bars is going to take a lot less time than baking your own (tip - batch baking and freezing is your new best friend).

 

But as long as I kept the desire for my children to grow into healthy adults as my priority, it was possible. I wanted them to be nourished by real food, instead off slowly poisoned by chemicals, additives, colourings and preservatives. I wanted them to grow into adults that knew how to eat healthy foods.

 

So that very desire drove me to get up off my ass and make the time and effort to make them REAL food for a decent lunchbox, even when I just felt like chilling on the couch watching Seinfeld re-runs.

 

So yes, I totally get where you are at if you're looking at all these pretty pictures of healthy lunchboxes on social media, and rolling your eyes. Believe me, I was the Queen of Eye Rolling.

 

But, all you've got to do is START.

 

Start slowly, pick one thing at a time to change and go from there. Educate yourself and your children.

 

And yes, I will be posting more annoyingly healthy pictures of lunchboxes, not to piss you off, but to give you ideas and inspire you, because ultimately, that's how I got started.
